As the 2025/26 WSL2 season approaches, for Bristol City, it marks the 10 year anniversary of Bristol Academy WFC becoming Bristol City Women. The club has been one of the most influential across the South West of England even bringing in the fifth highest attendance during the 2023/24 campaign in which the club competed in the WSL, despite not having a Premier League team’s backing as the top four clubs do.
Bristol City started off in the WSL in 2016 in which they found themselves fighting to be in the top 6 teams before getting relegated to the Championship in 2021. They played for two seasons in the Championship placing 3rd in 2022 and then 1st in 2023 earning the team a promotion to the WSL for the next season. During the 2023/24 season, Bristol City struggled to get above the 11th space in the WSL meaning that relegation was almost guaranteed.
Despite the Robins’ only trophy being from their win of the 2022/23 Championship, they managed to reach the final of the 2021 Continental League Cup. The match ended 6-0 to Chelsea which was a massive defeat for Bristol City.
At first, all matches were played either in a stadium in Bath which was shared with Bath City Women’s team or at the Bristol City training ground. But now, a large majority of Bristol City’s games are played at Ashton Gate- the biggest stadium in south west England.
Due to the 10 year anniversary of Bristol City women, the club announced that the team would have different kits that differ from the men’s teams. It was stated by the chairman that Bristol City plays a big part in growing the women’s game in the south west. The home and third kits have been released and include the motto “Proud to be Different” on the neckline along with the classic Bristol City red. The red shorts are also unique to the women’s team as the men’s team will wear white. The third kit follows the same style but in a smart white and black.
Players and fans look forward to the 2025/26 season that is rapidly approaching with many new signings and rebrand of the Barclays Championship.
