The Ballon D’or ceremony takes place on September 22nd and is home to the most prestigious footballing awards in the world. One of these awards is the Yashin trophy, a trophy which recognizes goalkeeping talent across the women’s game. This year's nominees are Ann-Katrin Berger, Cata Coll, Hannah Hampton, Chiamaka Nnadozie and Daphne Van Domselaar. Following the Euros, the champions league and each players’ domestic league campaigns, this sets up a very competitive set of nominees. Who deserves to win though, when all 5 have had exceptional seasons?

Ann-Katrin Berger stole the headlines during the Euros after an incredible save to prevent an own goal from Minge. As well as this, Berger saved multiple penalties during the penalty shootout against France which sent Germany through to the semi finals. Not only did Berger have an amazing European tournament, she has also had a brilliant season for her domestic club - Gotham FC. Berger has shown leadership and great box command with Gotham, as well as 8 clean sheets. Many media outlets think that Berger is in the top 3 to win this year’s trophy, especially given her outstanding performance in this year’s Euros.
Cata Coll has continued an excellent run of form for Barcelona, with only -x- goals conceded in the 24/25 season for her club. As a result of Coll’s form for Barcelona, she won the Zamora Trophy in the 24/25 season, which boosts her chances of potentially winning the Yashin trophy. Fast forward to the summer of 2025 and Coll became a Euros runner up, with her at the heart of Spain’s run. Although eventually losing the penalty shootout, Coll did save Beth Mead’s penalty, which gave Spain a brief lead. The Spanish number 1 is a calm and surgical distributor, with high chances to win this year, however the Euro loss and Champions League loss could hinder her chances.
Hannah Hampton is among the favourites to win this years award, after only conceding 3 penalties from 11 and playing a pivotal role in the Lionesses’ Euros win, along with an almost flawless campaign with Chelsea. The Euros saw Hampton step up and save England’s European hopes many a time, including crucial saves in stoppage time, impeccable goal kicks and multiple penalty saves. Hampton broke out from understudy to serial winner due to her insane shot stopping and perfected distribution. Her season with Chelsea is just as impressive, if not more, with her being a WSL champion, domestic treble winner and the shared winner of the WSL golden glove, after picking up 13 clean sheets. Although the golden glove was shared, Hampton conceded 13 goals, the lowest amount across the WSL. These stats put Hampton in prime position for the Yashin trophy, however there is competition all around.
Chiamaka Nnadozie has had a meteoric rise outside a super-club and is a well established penalty saver. Although maybe the least known of the 5 nominees, Nnadoozie has the same chance as everyone else to win this year, with her 24/25 stats setting her up to be a very possible winner. For her club, the Nigerian goal keeper only conceded 20 goals in all club competitions with 11 clean sheets in the French league (the second highest amount). If we look at her international accolades last season, she won best goalkeeper at the WAFCON and also won the competition with her country. Nnadozie also has an elite penalty record, reflexes in tight spaces and rapid adaptation in Europe. All of this makes her a compelling under-dog candidate with a growing trophy cabinet.
Daphne Van Domselaar has had a standout season with Arsenal, including a Champions League win, which puts her in prime position to win as well. After transferring to Arsenal she quickly became a cornerstone at the back, with multiple clean sheets in the WSL including some standout performances. Domselaar was pivotal in Arsenal’s champions league win, providing reliability and consistency between the posts. On the international side, Domselaar logged a high save percentage of around 80% and only conceded 1 goal, despite the Netherlands’ early exit from the Euros. This makes her a very strong contender, however a lack of individual awards or international trophies hinder her chances slightly.
To conclude, the 5 nominees aren’t just nominees, they are all contenders. Any 5 of these goalkeepers could win, and it is almost impossible to predict who will. You can find out at the Ballon D’or ceremony on the 22nd of September by watching on L’Equipe’s official YouTube Channel.
