Chelsea host Liverpool on Sunday at midday, with both sides looking to pick up some crucial points. For Chelsea, a win is vital to keep their slim title hopes alive and strengthen their push for Champions League qualification. Meanwhile, Liverpool will be targeting three points to extend their gap over the relegation zone, with the battle at the bottom currently tighter than the title race itself.

Both sides' recent form

The home side come into this fixture following a slightly rocky run of form. With two defeats in their last five games, Chelsea find themselves in unfamiliar territory after years of dominance in the league.

They currently sit third in the WSL, the final Champions League spot, but even with a win, they would only climb to second and remain nine points behind the leaders. A heavy defeat to Manchester City a few weeks ago was a setback, but the Blues responded well with an important 2–0 victory over London rivals Tottenham.

Liverpool, however, arguably come into the game in better form. The Reds have momentum from an impressive 4–1 win over Aston Villa last weekend, following a 3-1 defeat to Manchester United.

In their last five matches, Liverpool have picked up three wins and suffered one loss less than Chelsea.

Both teams possess enough attacking quality and firepower to win this game, and previous meetings suggest that this fixture is almost always a close one.

Last time out

Aside from Chelsea’s dominant 9-1 League Cup win over Liverpool last year, recent clashes between these sides have been decided by fine margins, often with just one goal being the difference. Chelsea typically dominate possession against Liverpool, averaging between 60—70%, but this does not always translate into victories. A key example came in the reverse fixture earlier this season, where Chelsea had 66% possession but were held to a draw. Similarly, in the 2023/24 season, they had 61% of the ball yet left Liverpool with zero points. These results highlight how, despite Chelsea’s control, Liverpool are capable of disrupting their rhythm and capitalising on key moments.

If past encounters are anything to go by, this match promises to be entertaining and closely fought,  definitely not one to miss. The game will be streamed live on the WSL’s YouTube channel, with kick-off at 12pm.
