Dagný Brynjarsdóttir is a commanding and composed central midfielder known for her intelligent play, aerial strength, and leadership qualities. Hailing from Hella, Iceland, she began her career with Valur before moving to the United States, where she became a standout player for Florida State University.

During her college career, she won the 2014 NCAA Championship and scored a record 44 goals, 19 of which were match-winners. Her club career has spanned top teams across Europe and the U.S., including stints with Bayern Munich, Portland Thorns—where she won the 2017 NWSL Championship—and currently West Ham United, where she has served as captain and was named Women’s Player of the Year in 2022–23.
Internationally, Dagný has been a fixture for the Iceland national team since making her debut in 2010. She has earned over 100 caps and delivered one of her nation’s most iconic moments by scoring the winning goal against the Netherlands at UEFA Women’s Euro 2013—despite playing with a broken foot. She remains a central figure for Iceland, valued for her tactical awareness, physicality, and calm under pressure.
Beyond her footballing achievements, Dagný Brynjarsdóttir has become a trailblazer in redefining motherhood in women’s football. In 2018, she gave birth to her first son, Brynjar Atli, while playing for Portland Thorns in the NWSL. Many questioned whether she would return to elite football, but Dagný proved them wrong returning to the pitch with renewed determination and going on to lead both club and country. In early 2024, she gave birth to her second child and once again defied the odds by returning to international football less than a year later. Throughout her journey, she has spoken openly about the emotional and physical challenges of pregnancy, recovery, and balancing family life with the demands of elite sport. Her courage and commitment have made her a powerful role model, showing the world that motherhood and professional success can thrive side by side. She continues to inspire a new generation of footballers—on and off the pitch—with her belief that women shouldn’t have to choose between their careers and starting a family. Dagný Brynjarsdóttir is more than a midfielder—she’s a leader, a mother, and a symbol of what is possible when passion, resilience, and belief come together. Her legacy will be remembered not only for the goals she scored and the titles she lifted, but for the boundaries she broke and the doors she opened for those who come next.
