Karen Carney, former professional footballer and now Strictly Come Dancing contestant, recently opened up about her hidden health condition, Scheuermann’s Kyphosis.
Carney had an amazing career with Chelsea, Arsenal, Birmingham City, and England’s National team.
Scheuermann’s kyphosis is where the top of your spine is abnormally curved, which can make your posture look more hunched or rounded. It happens because the vertebrae doesn’t grow evenly, so instead of being rectangular, it becomes more wedge-shaped. That uneven growth is what causes the spine to bend forward.
Speaking on Saturday’s episode of Strictly Come Dancing, Karen explained,"I have this thing called Scheuermann's. I've had it since I was a kid. It's a curve in my spine. It's really, really hard for me to open my back up. There are certain elements that I won't be able to do as well as I'd love to. But Carlos is really supportive, really encouraging."
I didn’t know of any other footballers who had a spinal curvature, so hearing Karen speak about hers meant a lot to me. I live with a different type of spinal curvature and, although I’m still waiting for clear answers, it’s already affected my life and even stopped me from playing football. Hearing someone as successful as Karen open up about her own challenges was such a comfort and its made me feel less alone in my journey.
Karen’s openness on Strictly was more than just a personal revelation, it was a powerful reminder that footballers, no matter how successful, face battles beyond the pitch. For me, it was reassuring to know I’m not alone in dealing with a spinal curvature, and I hope her honesty inspires others to feel the same. By sharing these stories, we not only raise awareness but also show that strength comes in many forms whether it’s on the dance floor, the football pitch, or in everyday life.
