Liverpool FC Women have made their move – Gareth Taylor is officially in as the new head coach, confirmed today (August 8).

Taylor’s no stranger to the WSL. He spent nearly five years in charge of Manchester City Women, picking up the FA Cup in 2020 and the League Cup in 2022, plus coming painfully close to the league title in 2023/24 – missing out only on goal difference. His time at City ended back in March after a tough run of results, but you can’t ignore the consistency he brought: regular top-four finishes, strong cup runs, and plenty of European experience.
So why Liverpool? According to LFC Women’s MD Andy O’Boyle, Taylor was “the outstanding candidate,” someone who can build a clear playing identity and help players reach the next level. And let’s be honest – that’s exactly what this Liverpool side will need if they want to push back into the WSL’s top tier.
Taylor’s just as excited about the challenge:
“When Liverpool come calling, it’s really hard to resist… there’s a real good connection with the supporters – I think it’s unparalleled.”
He’s talking about building a team fans can be proud of, one that plays good football and brings success along the way.
This feels like a statement appointment from Liverpool – a fresh start, a bit of ambition, and a coach who knows how to compete at the very top.
