First Half:
At kick off, the tempo was fast and electric, with Liverpool’s front line immediately asserting themselves as Aston Villa’s defence held strong.
It didn’t take long for the Reds to break through. Mia Enderby latched onto a brilliant delivery and fired the ball into the back of the net, with Ceri Holland providing the assist!
In the 14th minute, Liverpool doubled through Martha Thomas, the January loan signing from Tottenham. The forward made a stunning composed finish and made her mark on the score sheet! The Reds pinned Aston Villa deep for much of the first half. Wave after wave of attacks forced the Villains onto the back foot, with Liverpool holding tight control as Villa struggled to find a way out.
Aston Villa pushed hard in search of a way back into the game, but Liverpool’s defence remained composed, regaining possession and blocking out danger whenever Villa threatened to build momentum.
Both Ceri Holland and Alejandra Bernabé were central to the control of the ball, working to provide balance, support and stability on Liverpool’s left side. Their connection helped Liverpool play strong and maintain structure during Villa’s strongest phases. On the other team, Villa goalkeeper Sabrina D’Angelo was kept busy, producing a series of crucial saves to prevent the scoreline from stretching further during the first half as Liverpool continued to apply pressure.
Play was briefly paused when Georgia Mullett went down on the pitch, making a pause for treatment. After being assessed by the medical team and taking a short breather, she spoke with Villa manager, Natalia Arroyo, before making her return to the action.
Villa responded to Liverpool’s 2 goals, soon after, pulling a goal back through Miriael Taylor, who slipped the ball past Liverpool goalkeeper Jennifer Falk to reignite the game.
The fourth official then indicated 5 minutes of added time at the end of the first half, with the teams heading into the break at 2-1 to Liverpool.
Second Half:
Both sides later returned swiftly for the second half, with Aston Villa making an immediate change as Noelle Maritz replaced Ebony Salmon.
Moments after the restart, a heavy collision brought the stadium to a sudden silence. Liverpool’s Alejandra Bernabé went down alongside Villa goalkeeper Sabrina D’Angelo, during a clash, prompting immediate concern from players on both sides. While Bernabé was assessed and deemed fit to continue, D’Angelo was unable to carry on and was substituted off, being replaced by Ellie Roebuck, forcing an early and significant change for the visitors.
Around the 58th minute mark, Liverpool were awarded a free kick with Ceri Holland crossing the ball in, hoping for one of her teammates to slip the ball into the net through the busy box, yet the ball was caught in safe hands of Ellie Roebuck.
Later in the second half, both sides turned to their benches, with Liverpool introducing two January signings, Alice Bergström and Aurélie Csillag who replaced two of today’s goalscorers, Martha Thomas and Mia Enderby. The changes allowed the Reds to maintain fresh and dominant while managing minutes for players.
Aston Villa also made a double substitution of their own as Jenna Nighswonger and Charity Grant were introduced in place of Georgia Mullett and Rachel Maltby, giving fresh legs for the visitors who continued to search for an equaliser.
Liverpool continued to press, creating further opportunities through Kapocs, Bergström, and Csillag, though Villa’s defence stood firm to block and frustrate the home side during sustained periods of pressure.
The Birmingham side remained active in their approach, making another change as Lucy Staniforth replaced Oriane Jean-François, underlining their intent to stay competitive deep into the second half.
The decisive moment arrived in the 83rd minute when reds’ captain Grace Fisk rose to the occasion, firing home a stunning third goal to put the result beyond doubt. The stadium erupted in celebration with the home support in full voice as Liverpool moved into a comfortable position.
As the match approached the 90-minute mark, the fourth official signalled eight minutes of added time. Liverpool again made their immediate response by freshening up their defence. Gemma Bonner was introduced in place of Risa Shimizu to add experience and solidity to the back line for the closing stages.
Any remaining doubt was erased deep into stoppage time.
In the 97th minute, Aurélie Csillag capped livelily with a superb finish, racing onto an excellent delivery from Gemma Bonner, before slotting the ball home to make it 4-1 to the hosts.
The final whistle confirmed a convincing victory for Liverpool, as the Reds closed out the contest with a commanding 4-1 scoreline.
