London City Lionesses have confirmed the appointment of Eder Maestre as the Club’s new Head Coach until summer 2028.
The 39-year-old Spaniard arrives having most recently managed CD Tenerife Femenino, where he guided the club to a sixth-place finish in Spain’s top tier, Liga F.
Previous to this, Maestre was the assistant coach at Real Sociedad, where he helped the team finish second in Liga F, secure qualification for the UEFA Women’s Champions League and reach the Copa de la Reina final.
With this Spanish experience, Maestre will help reinforce the ‘Spanish Influence’ London City Lionesses have adopted.
Maestre’s first challenge with the Lionesses comes just over a week after his appointment, where his squad will face an away trip, up north, to Liverpool.
On his appointment, Maestre stated: “I am delighted to join London City Lionesses. Working in English football has always been my goal, and representing this Club is a real honour.
“In my opinion, the project presented to me by the Club is one of the best projects in women’s football. The Club’s ambitions are clear and aligned with my own, and I am excited to start work.
“Solid foundations are already in place here. I believe we have all the ingredients to continue creating something very powerful. Our aim now is to work together to reach our goals in the next stage of London City’s development.
“Our fans are going to be hugely important during the second half of the season. I look forward to meeting them at our away matches in Liverpool and Sunderland, and then at the CopperJax Community Stadium in Bromley against Manchester City.”
Additionally, London City Lionesses Chief Executive Martin Semmens added: “Eder’s arrival is a significant moment for the Club and we are delighted to welcome him to London City. After a detailed search, it was clear that Eder’s values as a person align with ours, and his vision of what we will see on the pitch will help us reach our ambitious goals.
“Eder has a strong desire and focus on developing players and building winning teams. With our plans for a new training ground, continued development of our playing squad, and ongoing investment in the women’s game, we believe Eder will play a key role in accelerating our growth.
“Welcome to Eder from everyone associated with London City, and we look forward to seeing supporters at our matches in the coming weeks.”
With London City Lionesses currently placed sixth in the WSL table and the club’s clear desire to be pushing for a spot near the top, Maestre has to prove himself against some tough fixtures in the upcoming weeks.
