"They are all here to stay" - Marc Skinner
Manchester United coach Marc Skinner ahead of clash against Arsenal.
This morning, I had the pleasure of being apart of the press conference interview with Manchester United’s head coach Marc Skinner alight of the weekends match against current 3rd place position – Arsenal. Skinner referenced Arsenal as a ‘tough contender’ due to the team being current champions of Europe and other success stories. However, Skinner also mentioned that even though Arsenal are a difficult home side to break (as they have not lost a singular home game throughout the season), him and his team will not let that statistic overshadow the match. Adding to Skinner’s accreditation, this game is also his 100th in the WSL – making him one of only six to do that with one club. So, no matter the result, this clash is significant for the history of the league and Marc Skinner’s coaching career as a whole.
One of the main points of conversation was actually about the potential expiry of contracts; from the likes of Ella Toone, Elisabeth Terland, Lisa Naalsund and Gabby George. This news story in the transfer window has been widely spread as there were circling rumours of these certain players leaving at the end of this window. However, all four of these mentioned players are not leaving anytime soon as they all have received 18-month extension contracts from the club – in which those players are all offered a contract to play until Summer 2027. This news was shared by Skinner himself as he joyfully exclaims that ‘they are all here to stay.’
In light of Saturday’s blockbuster match – one key player was kept in the focus of Skinner’s eye: Lea Schuller. Schuller has been a headline signing in this January window following her departure from Bayern to make her debut in the Women’s Super League for the reds. There also was fear in that with Lea joining the club and making a dramatic impact, that Elisabeth Terland’s role would be surplus to requirement in certain formations the team has produced. However, Marc has acknowledged this information but has clarified that both of their skills harmonise perfectly together as a pair of strikers – rather than on their own. In Skinner’s words ‘[Lea’s] a fantastic central striker, and so is Teri (Terland). So, for me it’s trying to get the best out of both of them and in the right moment.’
Although, some slight disheartening news, Ella Toone will be unavailable for the clash against Arsenal this weekend after sustaining a bone stress response in her hip, prompting the club to take a cautious approach to her recovery. Skinner confirmed that the midfielder is expected to be sidelined for a few weeks, emphasising that the decision has been made with Toone’s long-term health firmly in mind. While her absence represents a significant blow given her influence and creativity in the side, the move underlines United’s commitment to player welfare over short-term gain, a prudent decision at a critical stage of the season.
Even though Manchester United are flying through this season strongly, it is fairly obvious that they haven’t sealed a major victory over the top leading teams in the 25/26 games so far, but could this all change this weekend? With only one point separating them, the dynamic of the game may completely evolve the standings in the table and could easily decide who’s going to play in the Champion’s League 26/27 matches.
What remains clear, however, is that this fixture represents more than just another test in the league calendar. It is a defining moment for a Manchester United side intent on cementing its place among Europe’s elite, guided by a coach reaching a landmark of rare distinction. With long-term commitments secured, belief reinforced from within the squad, and tactical confidence in his attacking options, Marc Skinner approaches the challenge with both conviction and continuity. Regardless of the outcome, Saturday’s clash stands as a statement of intent — that Manchester United are not merely contenders in the present, but architects of a sustained future at the top of the Women’s Super League.
