Match Preview: Barcelona V Chelsea

Barcelona will face Chelsea on the 20th of April at the Estadi Johan Cruyff for the first leg of the UEFA Women’s Champions League semi-final.

Last season, these two teams faced one another in the Champions League semi-final which ended 2 - 1 to Barcelona who then went on to taking home the Champions League title for the second season in a row. Both Chelsea and Barcelona have won every Champions League match played this season so, who do you think will take the spot in the final?


These two teams have played each other five times previously which has amounted to one draw, three wins for Barcelona, and only one win for Chelsea.


Barcelona are a team who largely dominate both Liga F and the Women’s Champions League and is a team consisting of well-experienced and high level players. 14 of which were included in the 100 Best Female Players of 2024 list published by The Guardian. One of these players is Aitana Bonmati who is a two time Ballon D’or winner and has gained 192 appearances for the club as well as 66 goals. She is also largely regarded as the best player in the women’s game to date. Another one of Barcelona’s players to look out for is 18 year old Vicky Lopez who made her senior team debut at just 16 making her the youngest player to make her debut for Barcelona women’s senior team. Since then, she has made 30 appearances and scored ten goals.


Chelsea also dominate the WSL in England having won the WSL seven times and are currently on a five season winning streak. Chelsea is regarded as one of the most successful English clubs for Women’s football gaining many titles and a large number of silverware. Many of their players were also included in

The Guardian's 100 Best Female player list for 2024. The highest rated player from Chelsea was Mayra Ramirez who has 23 appearances along with seven goals after joining Chelsea in early 2024. She is described as a “versatile forward” who can play anywhere across the front line. An up and coming

Chelsea player who appears to be catching the eyes of many fans is 19 year old Wieke Kaptein. She is a player often included in the starting XI for both club and country whose number of appearances and goals is always increasing. At age 15, she signed her first professional contract at Achilles ‘12 in the Netherlands.
