The Golden Girl Award, established in 2022, recognises the best female footballer under the age of 21 in one of Europe’s top leagues. Ten players are shortlisted, and 50 journalists vote to determine the winner based on their performances and contributions throughout the season.

Michelle Agyemang was named the winner of the 2025 Golden Girl Award, following an outstanding season at Brighton & Hove Albion. She had joined the WSL club on loan at the start of the 2024/25 campaign, remaining there for the full season.  She made 17 league appearances, racking up a total of 576 minutes, and featured in cup competitions including both the FA Cup and the Subway League Cup.

Her goals, assists, and consistent performances earned her several accolades at the club including: Brighton’s Young Player of the Season, a nomination for April’s WSL Player of the Month, and multiple Player of the Match awards. Beyond her individual success, she also helped Brighton achieve a historic 5th-place finish in the WSL, the club’s highest ever position in the league at the end of the season.

Despite her club success, Michelle Agyemang’s international career was where she really took off.  Although her journey at international level had only just begun, she wasted no time in making her mark in this already incredibly talented England side. At only 19, she received her first call-up to the England squad, making a sensational debut against Belgium on 8th April 2025, scoring just 41 seconds after stepping onto the pitch.

Her remarkable performance earned her a spot in Sarina Wiegman’s Euros 2025 squad in Switzerland, where she quickly proved to be a game-changer. In her 4 appearances throughout the tournament, Agyemang played decisive roles in England’s progression as she saved them not once but twice from making an exit from the competition; scoring in the 81st minute against Sweden in the quarter-finals to force extra time and penalties, and again in the dying moments against Italy in the semi-finals to push the game into extra time. At such a young age, she has already established herself as a national hero, living up to her name, which means ‘saviour of the nation.’

The Golden Girl award is a way of celebrating and highlighting the emerging talent of young and rising stars, helping recognise the bright future they have ahead of them. It also helps raise the profile of women's clubs as the game continues to grow, develop and flourish.
