Her legacy, both on and off the game, is well-established as a sporting icon and a force for change as she approaches her possible retirement.

Fishlock was born in Cardiff on January 14, 1987, and raised in Llanrumney, where she developed a passion for football during a Mia Hamm camp. In 2006, she received her first Wales cap after making her senior debut for Cardiff City Ladies at the age of 16. Fishlock is Wales' all-time leader in both categories with 165 caps and 48 goals for her country. She achieved 100 caps in April 2017 and 150 caps in April 2024, making her the first Welsh player to do so, male or female. In 38 years and 176 days, she became the oldest goal scorer in the history of the Euro finals when she scored Wales' first major tournament goal in the UEFA Women's Euro 2025. Jess Fishlock scored an exceptional goal in the group round match against France on July 9 in St Gallen. Offside was initially called, but VAR later verified it. She became the oldest goal scorer in a Women's EURO finals game. Although France won the game 4-1, Fishlock's historic effort marked a turning point for Wales. Despite Wales' elimination from the group stage, the goal sparked celebration as it marked a historic debut.

For her contributions to women's football and the LGBTQ+ community, Fishlock was named an MBE in 2018 where the Prince of Wales presented her with the honour at Buckingham Palace. In December 2020, Fishlock was selected for the Stonewall Sports Champion Team which is the biggest LGBTQ+ rights group in Europe.

A painting featuring Jess Fishlock, the record-breaking goal scorer for Wales, has been revealed. The homage honours her contributions to football, equality, and representation and spans the playing field of a five-a-side football field in Splott, Cardiff. It was displayed prior to Wales' Euro 2025 debut in Switzerland, as the team qualified for their first major tournament ever. It is thought to be the first of its sort in Europe for a female football player.
