Once this had happened, the club then said that they will apply for the licensing on an annual basis to avoid another situation like this. The club also confirmed that they have a plan to have an independent board just for the women’s team. The robust application process represents a huge milestone for this Wolves team. The application has several areas which need to be met. These are, financial and business management, facilities, marketing and commercial plans, key staff to the club, player contact time and regional partnerships.
The deadline for submitting the application was 12pm on the 5th of February. The club will hear back and be able to review and add any detail from the 20th of February. The final decision will be communicated once the 2025/26 season has concluded. Wolves will need to finish top of the National League Northern Premier Division and also prove the off-field operations to guarantee promotion at the end of the season. Currently, Wolves are sat in second just four points behind league leaders Burnley however Wolves have 2 games in hand. Wolves' season is set to finish on the 26th of April.
An insight from the club
The technical director Matt Jackson has said “It’s taken a huge amount of work from many people across the club to put together a comprehensive bid for promotion... Since last season we’ve been working towards this moment, doing the groundwork to put us in a position where we could support the bid. In that time, we’ve hired full time, dedicated women’s staff to assist the process... Our women’s first team have done a fantastic job to put us in a position once more where we’re fighting to get promoted to WSL2 and we’ll be supporting them all the way in their bid to go up during the remainder of the season”.
This shows us how the club are backing the team to get promoted to WSL2 to drown out last season where they were told at the end of the season that no application had been submitted.
Last season Beth Merrick took to X, formerly known as Twitter, and posted a statement on how she felt about the situation. She said “Imagine fighting for promotion all season to find our championship bid was never submitted. As a group we are absolutely devastated to finish the season this way and believe it speaks volumes about the clubs ambitions for the women’s team. For our staff to have to deliver this news to us moments after is astonishing."
The news was delivered to the players the day of the final game of the season against Nottingham Forest who were leading the league however if Wolves would have beaten Nottingham Forest, then they would have won the league and secured promotion which wouldn’t have been fulfilled because of the club not submitting the application.
