After the Dutch captain, Sherida Spitse retired from the national team, the new head coach Arjan Veurink needed to choose a new captain for the Dutch. On the 27th of November, the new captain was chosen: Dominique Janssen.
Earlier this week Veurink already mentioned him making his choice. In interviews from last Tuesday he said: ‘You talk with players, but you make the choice who’s gonna wear the armband.’ Veurink also tells about his conversation with Vivianne Miedema, Miedema tells ‘We have come to the conclusion together that I don’t need an armband to be a leader in this team. I believe we all know how long I have been on the field here, present with the team, and that I always take my responsibilities seriously and try to perform them as best as possible. Now I can fully focus on myself, so I can be as fit and as good as possible on the field for all of us.’ In that interview he also said about Janssen: ‘I think Do has done well in the past period. Does that call for a follow-up? Maybe, we’ll see. I have made up my mind for myself.’
Arjan Veurink has made his decision, the 30-year old defender becomes the new captain of the team. In March 2014 Janssen made her debut, she now has 130 interlands under her name.
Veurink has a lot to say about Janssen and his decision. She is a connecting link in this team, and those are qualities I was looking for as the leader of this team. We had a very good conversation about it together. I’m glad she said yes with pride. According to Veurink.
