Germany take on Spain at the Fritz-Walter-Stadion in Kaiserslautern at 8:30 pm in the first leg of the Women’s Nations League final. Spain enter the match as the current Nations League champions, having beaten France in February 2024 to lift the inaugural trophy, and now face Germany, who claimed the bronze medal in that same edition.

These two world-class teams have met eight times, with Germany winning four, Spain winning once, and three matches ending in a draw. Their last two encounters came in high-stakes moments: Germany beat Spain 1-0 to secure the Olympic bronze medal in summer 2024, while Spain returned the favour with a 1-0 victory over Germany in the Euros 2025 semi-final, before eventually losing on penalties in the final to the two-time reigning European champions, England.

Current world champions Spain topped Group A3 (consisting of Spain, England, Belgium and Portugal) with 15 points, winning five of their six matches; their only loss was a 1-0 defeat to England at Wembley. Advancing to the semi-finals, Spain, under new head coach Sonia Bermúdez, defeated Sweden 5-0 on aggregate over two legs.

Germany, ranked fifth in the world, topped Group A1(consisting of Germany, Netherlands, Austria and Scotland) with 16 points, winning five and drawing one; a 2-2 draw in their opening fixture with the Netherlands. In the semi-finals, Germany faced France in a two-legged tie, winning 3-2 on aggregate, with a 1-0 victory in the first leg and a 2-2 draw in the second.

Both sides showcase top-class players to watch; two-time Ballon d’Or winner Aitana Bonmatí consistently drives Spain’s midfield and attacking play, her experience evident in her decision-making and goal threat. Rising star Vicky López is technically gifted, with creativity and composure that shines despite her young age. German captain Giulia Gwinn is a key leader, her defensive solidity crucial to her team, while Klara Bühl spearheads Germany’s attack, providing pace and a constant goal threat for opponents.

With these two world-class teams going head-to-head, fans can expect a thrilling and closely contested match. Spain will look to impose their possession-based style, using their technical mastery and creativity in midfield to control the game, while Germany will showcase their disciplined defence, quick transitions, and attacking pace to exploit any openings. Given the history and quality on both sides, this clash promises high drama and intense competition, with both teams making the most of the crucial moments in this opening leg.
