Matchday 12 of the Bundesliga saw Leverkusen host Leipzig in a crucial encounter
between two sides both looking to end a run of three consecutive defeats. Adding
extra narrative tension was the reunion of two forwards who had swapped clubs in
the summer. In the end, Leverkusen held on for a narrow 3–2 victory, securing a
valuable three points and finally halting their losing run.
Two Forwards Swapped in the Summer and Pre-Match Injury Concerns
The focal point of this match was the meeting between the two attacking players
involved in the direct swap deal. Current league top scorer Vanessa Fudalla faced
her former club Leipzig for the first time, while 19-year-old Delice Boboy, buoyed by
her recent goal for Germany’s U23s, returned to familiar surroundings as an
opponent.
Both teams had to contend with significant injury issues. Leverkusen welcomed back
captain and goalkeeper Friederike Repohl after a six-match absence, and last
season’s top scorer Cornelia Kramer also returned from the bench. Leipzig’s situation
was more difficult, with several long-term injuries—including multiple ACL
tears—leading to a first Bundesliga call-up for U20 midfielder Sarah Dittrich.
First Half: Leverkusen’s Lightning Start and Clinical Finish
From the start, Leverkusen seized control, demonstrating clinical efficiency. In just
the 2nd minute, Leverkusen capitalised on goalkeeper Elvira Herzog’s inability to
secure a low cross, allowing Loreen Bender to tap in for the opener. In the 9th
minute, a rapid counter-attack saw Bender assist Estrella Merino, who drove the ball
home from distance for her first league goal of the season, extending the lead to 2-0.
The breakthrough came in the 17th minute, when a foul by Marlene Müller in the box
resulted in a penalty. Fudalla stepped up and calmly converted, marking the
signature goal of the encounter against her former club, locking the score at 3-0 at
half-time.
Second Half: Desperate Counter-Attack Meets Tactical Defence
Facing the 0-3 deficit, Leipzig showed immense determination after the break,
launching a sensational pursuit. In the 56th minute, Müller slotted the ball into an
open net after receiving a long pass and calmly rounding the GK, pulling the score
back to 3-1. Just four minutes later, in the 60th minute, Müller assisted Emilía
Ásgeirsdóttir to score, bringing the score to a tense 3-2.
Facing huge pressure, Leverkusen was forced to shift into a defensive strategy. In
the 80th minute, the Leverkusen coach made key tactical changes, substituting
goalscorer Fudalla for defender Melissa Friedrich and introducing Kramer to help
control the midfield tempo. Substitute Valentina Mädl created two dangerous chances
for Leverkusen, but GK Herzog made an exceptionally brilliant save in the 88th minute to deny Mädl.
Final Whistle
Leverkusen ultimately held firm against Leipzig’s late pressure. The 3–2 win earned
them a crucial victory and ended their three-match losing streak, while Leipzig remain
winless away to Leverkusen and were unable to complete their second-half
comeback.
