Tottenham Hotspur V Bristol City

Women’s League Cup - Group Stage - Group E

Venue: Robins High Performance Centre

Tottenham Hotspur has secured a spot in the quarter-finals of the Women’s League Cup after a hard fought 1-0 victory over Bristol City. Spurs put in a strong performance to advance in the tournament.

First Half:

The match kicked off with ambitions from both teams to gain a goal. Tottenham looked strong in the first half and looked to make an instant impact with a near goal from Amanda Nilden, which was the closest they had come to a goal in the opening moments.

Play after that was quiet, with Martha Thomas getting the ball in the back of the net, however her quick reaction to Olivia Holdt’s low shot was disallowed as she was deemed to be in the offside position.

Despite Lize Kop’s limited involvement in the first half, Bristol managed to create some attacking plays which kept the backline for Spurs on high alert. Olivia Johnson was frequently trying to make runs down the left-hand side, showing ambition in her attempts to get the ball into the back of the net on home soil.

During the first half Tottenham had most possession, however the Robins showed resilience and their backline remained defensive which led to limited opportunities from Spurs.

Second Half:

In the start of the second half, Tottenham wasted no time in their pursuit of a goal. Their determination paid off almost immediately. Only 16 seconds after the game restarted, a well-placed cross from Matilda Vinberg found Martha Thomas who guided the ball into the bottom corner of the net, which led to Tottenham taking the lead. Bristol attempted a quick response, but Lexi Lloyd-Smith, who was eager to create more chances, unfortunately missed the target.

Throughout the remainder of the second half, the home side kept up their attacking efforts, creating more opportunities to extend their advantage. After Molly Bartrip came off the bench in the closing moments of the match, Spurs saw the game out which ended the match with a third successive clean sheet in the tournament.

In conclusion, Tottenham Hotspur secured a hard-fought victory over Bristol City. The early goal in the second half set the tone and despite Bristol’s efforts to equalize, the away team’s defence held strong. The match showcased Spurs attacking powers and their ability to capitalize on opportunities. For Tottenham this now means they will progress into the Quarter Finals of the Women’s League Cup.
